Halloween Pet Safety

Halloween is a fun time of year ushering in the holiday season and all of the decorations, parties, and good food and treats that come with it.  Unfortunately, this can be a very dangerous time for your pets.  Here are some tips for keeping your pets safe, healthy, and stress-free during Halloween.

We humans all love Halloween candy and treats, but that bowlful of goodies can be deadly to Fido and Fluffy.  Chocolate in all forms are potentially poisonous to your pets.  It can cause vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, hyperactivity, and increased thirst, urination, and heart rate even with a relatively small amount consumed.

In addition, candies and gums containing the sweetener Xylitol is toxic to pets, causing a sudden drop in blood sugar, depression, lack of coordination, and seizures.  Of course, tin foil and cellophane candy wrappers are hazardous because they can become stuck in the intestines, which would require emergency surgery.

Never allow your pets alcoholic beverages.  Keep drinks out of the reach of pets, especially if they are unattended.  Alcohol can cause coma and respiratory failure in animals.

Keep decorations including Halloween lights and their electrical cords out of your pets’ reach.  If you add a candle to your pumpkin, put it up high.  Fido or Fluffy could easily knock it over and start a fire, or get too curious and burn him or herself.

Pets should be kept in a separate room or blocked off from the front door during trick-or-treat hours.  All the noise and activity can be stressful for your pet, and it is too easy for an animal to slip out the front door with it being open so much.

Finally, make sure to have ID tags on your pets’ collars at all times!
